POST V: Performance #2

   Project #2 || Sound & Fluxus Workbook

For the second performance I worked again with Kristal.  We were inspired to create our piece after perusing the Fluxus Workbook and coming across a piece titled Lessons by Davi Det Hompson.  In which he lists the instructions: Arrange nine crackers on a table. Ask someone to choose the most beautiful cracker from the grouping. Smash the remaining crackers with your fist.”  We used this idea to shape our performance but added in a few touches of our own.  First, we had Kristal spin in a circle and close her eyes, randomly sopping in front of someone and pointing her finger at them; choosing who the “someone” to choose the crackers would be.  We also added in music, specifically the Austin Powers theme song.  This gave the performance more of a “gameshow” feel, as members of the audience commented on after the performance.  We ended when the music stopped.

What do you feel was most successful?
I really liked how Kristal and I were placed at opposite ends of the table, which I also liked the size of.  I felt this was effective - any longer and it wouldn’t have felt the same: intimate and concise.

What would you change?
Maybe the amount of crackers. I felt as though I ran out too quickly and I was starting to just pound on the table.

How did you feel while doing the work?
I felt excited - it was fun smashing the crackers and the Austin Powers music just added to it.  However, after awhile the bottom of my hand started to hurt.

  1. Zara,

    Very exciting piece. And great documentation! I think something interesting about this piece was that it was a straight shot of energy. In some pieces, artists use a build up > pinnacle > to build down tactic. I really appreciate how this was very up front with the intention of high energy. It kind of reminded of those energy shot beverages.

    I also really liked the simplicity of the materials used.This made the performance focalized. There was a clear direction.

    The tempos between you and Kristal were so fun to observe. It seemed organic but also done with consciousness of the other person's tempo.I look forward to seeing more!

  3. Wow! These photos are spot on. They show the fun and energy you two created. Can you find a record and record player in time for the live art night? I would love to see this again.
